Conducting a Wedding Ceremony (When You're Not A Celebrant)

As a celebrant, I’m often asked by couples whether a friend or family member can conduct their wedding ceremony. The short answer is: yes, it’s possible. The longer, and more important answer is that it’s not nearly as easy as it looks! With online videos and beautifully edited ceremonies filling social media, it can appear as though standing up, saying a few heartfelt words and declaring a couple married is a simple task. In reality, delivering a wedding ceremony is a skill. One that takes preparation, confidence, legal understanding and emotional awareness.

Why Wedding Ceremonies Are More Complex Than They Appear

A wedding ceremony isn’t just a speech. It’s a carefully held moment that sits at the junction of law, emotion, timing and performance.

An experienced celebrant is quietly doing many things at once:

  • Ensuring the ceremony meets Australian legal requirements

  • Reading the couple’s energy and adjusting the tone in real time

  • Managing nerves

  • Projecting their voice clearly and confidently

  • Keeping the ceremony flowing, on time and meaningful

The Legal Responsibilities Can’t Be Overlooked

In Australia, only an authorised celebrant can legally solemnise a marriage. There are specific words that must be spoken, documents that must be completed correctly, and timelines that must be followed. Any errors can cause unnecessary stress—or worse, invalidate the ceremony. This legal responsibility alone is enough to make even the most confident public speaker feel nervous.

The Skills Needed to Conduct a Ceremony Well

When a friend or family member steps into the role of officiant, they’re often doing it out of love—but love doesn’t replace skill. Some of the key abilities required include:

Public speaking and presence Speaking clearly, slowly and confidently in front of a crowd is harder than it sounds, especially when emotions are high.

Emotional intelligence Weddings are charged with feeling. A good ceremony holder knows when to pause, when to lighten the mood, and how to hold space if tears, laughter or nerves take over.

Structure and storytelling A ceremony needs shape. Without structure, it can feel rushed, awkward or overly long. Experienced celebrants know how to weave stories, vows and rituals into something that feels cohesive.

Calm under pressure Microphones fail. Pages get dropped. Someone forgets a ring. A skilled ceremony leader stays calm and keeps everyone else calm too.

Supporting Loved Ones Without Setting Them Up to Fail

Many couples love the idea of having someone meaningful lead their ceremony, but don’t want to burden them with legal responsibility or overwhelm them with pressure. This is where a collaborative approach can be the perfect solution!

At Enchanté Ceremonies, we offer flexible options that allow couples to honour personal connections while ensuring their ceremony is legally sound and beautifully delivered.

Enchanté Ceremonies “Choose Anyone to be your Celebrant” Packages

Solemnise & Customise Enchanté conducts all legal requirements and works closely with your chosen person—coaching and supporting them to create and confidently deliver your ceremony.

Legalities & Love Letters Enchanté creates the ceremony script and manages the legalities, while your chosen person delivers the ceremony itself, with professional guidance behind the scenes.

Formalities With Flair Enchanté conducts the legalities only. Your chosen person creates and delivers the ceremony independently, with no creative input from Enchanté.

When ceremonies are done well, they look effortless. That’s often because there’s experience, preparation and professionalism holding everything together.

If you’re considering having a loved one conduct your ceremony, know that it’s a beautiful idea, but one that benefits greatly from the right support. With thoughtful planning and the right structure, you can have a ceremony that’s personal, meaningful and legally sound, without placing unnecessary pressure on the people you love most.
